Physical geography is frequently in the news – everything from weather events and climate change, to volcanoes and earthquakes. For this assignment, you will research one recent event or phenomenon and write about your findings.

Instructions for the assignment:

  1. Identify a recent event or phenomenon that is related to the material that we are covering in this course. For example, you may want to research a winter storm that impacted the Sierra Nevadas, how climate change is affecting wildfire frequency, or a landslide that occurred following an intense rainfall event. These are just some examples – for more ideas on topics, flip through the chapters of the textbook or scroll through the content on this site. You may email me if you are uncertain if your topic is suitable for this assignment.
  2. Find two different news articles that report on your chosen event or phenomenon. Both news articles must meet all of the following constraints:
    • Have been published on or after January 1, 2020.
    • Be from one of the following reputable sources: The Los Angeles Times (Links to an external site.), The New York Times (Links to an external site.), The Washington Post (Links to an external site.), The Wall Street Journal (Links to an external site.), The San Francisco Chronicle (Links to an external site.), The Sacramento Bee (Links to an external site.), The Guardian (Links to an external site.), BBC News (Links to an external site.), The Atlantic (Links to an external site.), The Economist (Links to an external site.), Science News, ScienceDaily, Nature News (Links to an external site.), New Scientist (Links to an external site.), Ars Technica (Links to an external site.), The Conversation (Links to an external site.) Note: some of these sources have paywalls and may limit the number of articles that you can read without a subscription. You can access many of these sources with a free public library account, for example here (Links to an external site.) at the Los Angeles County Library or here (Links to an external site.) at the Los Angeles Public Library.
    • The same news feed repeated on different news sources does not count as separate articles.
  3. Write three complete paragraphs (Links to an external site.) (see rubric below for more grading details):
    • One paragraph summarizing the main points from the first article. You should relate the topics to the appropriate module/textbook chapters in this course. What did you find most interesting? What new things did you learn?
    • One paragraph summarizing the main points from the second article. You should relate the topics to the appropriate module/textbook chapters in this course. What did you find most interesting? What new things did you learn?
    • A third paragraph comparing/contrasting the ways that the two news sources reported on the articles. Some questions that you might address in this third paragraph include: did they come to the same or different conclusions, did the reporters interview different people, was one more interesting to read than the other?
  4. Properly reference all sources. You should use both in-text citations and a reference list (Links to an external site.). I’ve included hyperlinks to useful pages on the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University, but please click around on that site to find more helpful information for writing and referencing. You may also use the West LA College Writing Lab as a resource for completing this assignment.
  5. Do not plagiarize. Please see this page for more information about avoiding plagiarism. Any student found plagiarizing all or part of their assignment will immediately receive a grade of zero for the assignment.
  6. Submit your assignment online through Canvas before the deadline. Emailed files are not accepted. You may upload the assignment as a file (Word, pdf, rich text files are accepted, but Apple Pages files are not) or you may copy and paste your text into the text entry box. Students at West have access to Microsoft 365, which includes Word, as part of your enrollment. See the link in the menu at left. If you need help submitting an assignment online, please see this page. Immediately after submission, you will receive a Unicheck report, which will estimate how similar your writing is to online articles and other student work. This score is not your grade for the assignment.
